Weekly Update for 07.28.2008 to 08.03.2008

  • Functional Requirements and Software Development

We look forward to your tech lead’s review of the use cases and wiki and to his comments.

We have put together a draft document highlighting equipment and connectivity needs for the pilot and are awaiting Qualcomm’s comments or suggestions.

We have also put together a document with screenshots of the menu-driven system screens which will be walked through during the Rwandatel meetings and which will be finalized before the voice script and translations are begun.

At the request of the community health workers, we are adding four general household information screens to the use cases. Topics covered include bed nets (availability), hygiene (water and sanitation), insurance participation and gender-based violence.

Elizabeth and Vanessa participated in a site visit to the Busanza health center. Representatives from USAID Washington also attended and were investigating future funding needs at the community level. The health center director and 10 of the community health workers participated in the meeting and provided feedback on tools in progress and additional needs.

The sustainability plan, pilot plan, M&E plan, and press release are underway and are being developed collaboratively with Twubakane and Ministry staff while Vanessa is in Kigali.

  • Operations

Vanessa will be in Kigali for another week until 10 August.

The meeting with the CEO of Rwandatel has been confirmed for 6 August at 11am. The meeting will include representatives from the MOH, Twubakane and Qualcomm. Elizabeth Migwalla from Qualcomm will be joining Vanessa in Rwanda this week. The meeting goal is to secure support from Rwandatel for equipment and connectivity.

On behalf of our contracts team, may we ask you to please find out whether it would be possible to amend the contact’s deliverables schedule so as to reflect the later delivery date of the revised use cases and of other upcoming deliverables?

We will submit an invoice for the first $45,000 deliverable this week.

Weekly Update for 08.04.2008 to 08.10.2008

  • Functional Requirements and Software Development

As mentioned in last week’s update, at the request of the community health workers, we were planning on adding four general household information screens to the use cases. However, given ethical complexities associated with the topic of gender-based violence, we decided against the addition of the set of screens associated with this topic.

The sustainability plan, pilot plan, M&E plan, and press release are underway and are being developed collaboratively with Twubakane and Ministry staff and will continue being worked on upon Vanessa’s return from Kigali.

We still look forward to your tech lead’s review of the use cases and wiki and to his comments.

  • Operations

General results from the meeting with the CEO of Rwandatel, which took place on 6 August and included representatives from the MOH, Twubakane and Qualcomm and whose goal was to secure support from Rwandatel for equipment and connectivity, include:

-Rwandatel agreed to donate connectivity, hosting and technical expertise for the pilot.

-Qualcomm and Rwandatel agreed to work jointly to provide handsets. Handsets will be EV-DO compatible.

-Rwandatel verified there is good EV-DO connectivity in Kichukiro.

-Rwandatel requested an MOU to outline terms of the donation.

-Rwandatel would like to increase branding awareness with the pilot and would like stickers on the handsets.

On behalf of our contracts team, may we remind you to please let us whether it would be possible to amend the contact’s deliverables schedule so as to reflect the later delivery date of the revised use cases and of other upcoming deliverables?

We are submitting an invoice for the first $45,000 deliverable this week.

Now that a no-cost extension has been issued through December 20, our developer is resuming progress on the functional requirements and software development.

Operations

We thank you for the call you had with the IntraHealth team on 11/3 to address the issues of:

Labor and timesheets Revised contractual deliverables schedule Closeout

We submitted timesheets for September.

We are about to submit a monthly report with additional information on our performance through the month of October.

Weekly Update for 11.03.2008 to 11.09.2008

Functional Requirements and Software Development

Our developer was in touch with the translator to arrange the translation process. He has also ensured the usability of the Poedit software that will let the translator do his work offline and yield production-ready files for Kinyarwanda or French as well as of Launchpad’s translation tools which will allow him to work on the project without installing any new software.

Our developer also examined a system similar to the pilot, Baobabealth (http://www.baobabhealth.org) which used tablet PCs to access a local webserver and feeds data into an OpenMRS server. Following this examination, he is planning on using similar concepts to integrate the web application he has built and OpenMRS.

Operations

We would like to thank you again for the call you had with Vanessa, Marcus, and Jana on 11.03.2008 and to let you know that we are following up on the next steps as discussed during the call:

Labor and timesheets: We are going to prepare a summary of labor by month for local employees whose efforts benefited both the development of the LMI-supported telephone-enabled system and the Twubakane-supported community based information system, but whose time was charged to the Twubakane program.

Revised contractual deliverables schedule: An updated schedule for the remaining deliverables will be developed to match the extension’s new expected end date for the task order.

We are about to submit timesheets for October.

We are still awaiting payment for the travel invoices we have submitted thus far and hope you can update us on the status of this process.

Weekly Update for 11.10.2008 to 11.16.2008

Functional Requirements and Software Development

Our developer is pursuing his effort to apply concepts from a system similar to the pilot, Baobabhealth (http://www.baobabhealth.org) to integrate the web application he has built and OpenMRS.

A draft of the sustainability plan is being finalized.

Although user documentation is tempered by the fact that we will have no particular hardware without the pilot, our project manager is reviewing the available user documentation to ensure its accessibility, including on the Wiki.

Operations

As agreed, we are preparing a summary of labor by month for local employees whose efforts benefited both the development of the LMI-supported telephone-enabled system and the Twubakane-supported community based information system, but whose time was charged to the Twubakane program.

We will submit a revised contractual deliverables schedule to you this week.

Our October timesheets will be submitted shortly.

We are still awaiting payment for the travel invoices we have submitted thus far and hope you can update us on the status of this process.

Weekly Update for 11.17.2008 to 11.23.2008

Functional Requirements and Software Development

Our developer has been extracting necessary database schema from OpenMRS.

He should be able to start putting our indicators – that is, any which differ from OpenMRS’ stock indicators – into the database.

He has also begun working on the “glue” code to tie the current web-based prototype to the OpenMRS database.

An installation guide is being put together from tool available on OpenMRS.

An active dialog is taking place with the translators in Rwanda to ensure the translations are being done.

The draft of the sustainability, scalability, and pilot plans are being finalized and will soon be available on the Wiki.

Our project manager is pursuing his review of the available user documentation to ensure its accessibility, including on the Wiki.

Operations

As agreed, we are about to submit a summary of labor by month for local employees whose efforts benefited both the development of the LMI-supported telephone-enabled system and the Twubakane-supported community based information system, but whose time was charged to the Twubakane program.

We will submit a revised contractual deliverables schedule to you imminently.

Our October timesheets will be submitted shortly.

We are still awaiting payment for the travel invoices we have submitted thus far and hope you can update us on the status of this process.

Weekly Update 11.24.2008 to 11.30.2008

Functional Requirements and Software Development

Our developer has completed implementing a PHP interface to the OpenMRS DB Schema that is being used for the pilot. This approach, which is similar to the one taken by Baobab, will enable our developer to put indicators into OpenMRS and use the tools and user database available in OpenMRS while making the pilot web interface more accessible to development than OpenMRS’ Java-based web interface, that is, it allows our developer to complete the rapid coding necessary for the pilot without losing any of the existing functionality of OpenMRS.

Our developer plans on releasing the PHP interface under an Open Source license. This will be useful to other developers who have made queries on the OpenMRS Implementers mailing list about doing similar projects in PHP.

An active dialog is taking place with the translators in Rwanda to ensure the translations are being done.

An installation guide is being put together from tool available on OpenMRS.

The draft of the sustainability, scalability, and pilot plans are being finalized and will soon be available on the Wiki.

Our project manager is pursuing his review of the the available user documentation to ensure its accessibility, including on the Wiki.

Partners

We are proceeding with formally ending our relationship with Qualcomm since the pilot will no longer be taking place.

Operations

As agreed, we are about to submit a summary of labor by month for local employees whose efforts benefited both the development of the LMI-supported telephone-enabled system and the Twubakane-supported community based information system, but whose time was charged to the Twubakane program.

We look forward to your review of the contractual deliverables schedule we sent you last week.

Our October timesheets have been submitted and our November ones will be available soon.

We are looking forward to working out the fee issue on travel expenses.

As agreed, we will submit our final monthly report on December 17.
